The 2017 Yorkshire Choice Awards, an annual ceremony that celebrates the special achievements of people in Yorkshire businesses, sports and charities. Held in the pavilion at Leeds United Football Club’s Elland Road stadium, the awards night was a celebratory and glamorous affair, with guests coming together to congratulate all the nominees for their achievement.

We were so pleased to have been nominated for our work throughout 2016, in getting more women and girls outdoors and out of their comfort zones, getting involved in a sport that is generally considered to be a man’s domain. Last year we had over a thousand new women join us and take up the sport regularly in events not only in Yorkshire, but all over the country.

The category we were shortlisted in, Sporting Achievement of the Year, was kindly sponsored by the Wetherby Whaler, and included many of Yorkshire’s best achievers in sports. Just to be a finalist among some of the finest sportsmen and women in the county was a brilliant achievement for the Femmes Fatales, so we were excited to put on our glad rags and head out for the evening to celebrate.

We were astounded to be announced as runners-up to the Brownlee Brothers, a duo whose achievements and actions we have been inspired by; Two ordinary men from Yorkshire trying to conquer the world of Triathlon. The Brownlee brothers made history by winning the gold and silver medals in the triathlon at the Rio Olympics. Alistair crossed the finish line first to win gold, just ahead of his brother Jonnny who took the silver medal in Rio. Four years ago in London, the brothers became the first British siblings to stand on the podium for the same event at the summer Olympics. Elder brother Alistair won the gold and Jonathan crossed the line third to win bronze in the triathlon event at London 2012.

We’re slowly putting ladies clay pigeon shooting on the map and spreading the word about the sport we love, and will continue to do so with the massive encouragement we’ve been given by these awards!

We’d like to say a big thank you to Jo Maltby and Melanie Malcolm who organised the event that not only celebrated Yorkshire’s achievers, but raised vital funds for the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund, a cause very close to their hearts.

Thank you once again to everyone that took the time to lend their support to us by voting, and to all the awesome women and girls who have smashed clays with us!
